Harmful substances in cigs

I remember not too long ago I used to have middle of
the night benzene binges. And who wouldn’t want an
early morning dose of hydrogen cyanide?

I can’t believe what I used to crave was nothing more
than a tube of toxicity.

My first clue ought to have been when the Marlboro Man
died of lung cancer.

Good thing it’s never too late to quit!

RE:
I found an interesting way of looking at cravings from
the New York state health website, the 5 Ds:

1. DELAY a minute or two and the urge will pass.

2. DRINK WATER to fight off cravings.

3. DO SOMETHING ELSE to fight off cravings.

4. DEEP BREATHE It will relax you. Close your eyes and
take 10 slow deep breaths.

5. DISCUSS your thoughts and feelings with someone
close to you.

Just remember that the cravings will pass and that you
are bigger than nicotine. You’re in charge, not a
chemical cocktail we know as a cigarette!

I`m better

I just realized that I’ve stopped breaking out in a cold sweat
whenever I had a craving. I’m still a bit depressed, I still hate
the world sometimes, and I still want to smoke, but it’s gotten a
little bit better.

My worst cravings are in the morning, so I eat my oatmeal, drink my
coffee, and read what this group has to say. Your e-mails get me
through the rest of the day.

Thanks for listening.

Just a wee minute to thank those that have been there when I need them and
been able to back off when i ask them too.

I’m going through stages now where I like tiem to myself to do what I want
when I want.

I’m starting the Atkins diet tomorrow as well!

I cant’ wait to be honest.

I’ve been on my Gazelle each morning for 30mins and then shower or bath!

And the dog shall be receiving a 45 to 60 minute walk each and everyday too.
Plus I’m going to make more of an effort to play with her outside now that
the weather is here.

I dont’ neglect her. Far from it.

But I need to get away from the puter more.

think of the quit, as a positive thing

With the depression, think of the quit, as a possative thing, a step towards
being healthier, and you can do it. The pride in being able to say,I did
this, even though I felt so bad, is wonderful. Keep at it.

Straw

Hi,
I work at home also, I’m an Avon lady and I know what
you mean about being bored, taking a break, or in between tasks or
whatever. However when I worked in an office, I couldn’t wait to go
outside and “escape” my desk and take a break. Even during my first
quit, I’d still go outside to get away from that chained at the desk
feeling.
> When I fidgit I press my cuticles, LOL.
> One thing that I’ve heard of that might help is take a plastic
straw and cut it into the size of a cig, puff on that, deep puffs or
like that of a cigarette. You get oxygen and you get kind of a buzz
from puffing oxygen straws, plus you have that hand to mouth thing.

My name is Samantha and i’m from Australia.
For the past 3 year my smoking habit has gradually gotten worse and
worse. Now i feel i’m smoking and spending to much and i don’t feel
like the same person that i was before.
The reason i’m here is that i have 24 days until my QUIT day and i
feel i will need that extra support when the time comes.
I’ll enjoy sharing my experiences with everyone.

I can’t bear the thought of living without cigarettes.

Here is another letter from my subscriber.
I have smoked for 11 years (19-30) I’ve never attempted to quit because
I don’t like to set myself up for failure. However i’m ready now, or
more accurately, this is the timetable I’ve set up for myself. I’ve
never wanted to be a smoker in my 30′s. When you’re in your twenties
you’re dumb and think you’re invincible, as you get older, you know
better. even though my grandfather died from lung cancer. (I justified
it by saying, ‘Well he was my grandmother’s third husband, no blood
relative has died-yet’)

Before I throw down the gauntlet (cancer stick) I’d appreciate the heads
up on withrawal symptoms so I know what I can expect and prepare myself.
I can’t bear the thought of doing the same things I’ve done without
cigarettes. Somehow it became a reward system for me. I can’t sit at
the computer without them. I can’t spell check without them (what will
i do with my hands while i’m waiting?) Waiting for the bus, i time how
long i’ve been standing there by the length of my cig. And forget about
talking on the phone or a lively conversation. How will i argue without
waving a cig in my opponents face?

I hope to join you soon, tallying up cigs not smoked, money saved, but
i’m a scaredy-cat.

Help please!

RE:Jen,

The first thing you’ll have to do is think up
replacements for all your paired behaviors.
cigarette/computer; cigarette/argue; cigarette/phone;
etc. etc.

One behavior does not equal the need for a cigarette.

As long as you think in terms of “I can’t bear the
thought of … ” quitting will be a lot harder than it
has to be.

The single best piece of advice I got from a
psychologist is to think in terms of what you are
STARTING rather than what you are leaving behind.
Think in terms of “I’m starting a healthier lifestyle
and leaving behind a nasty habit.”

The better you are at changing that voice inside you
to self-talk that you don’t need a cigarette and that
you are a nonsmoker the easier it will be to get past
the first week.

Before you take the plunge, figure out something you
can do to keep your hands busy. Oftentimes, it’s
harder to break the hand-to-mouth habit than it is to
get past the need to induce more nicotine into your
body.

Understand that the first week is the hardest and
you’ll have cravings. The cravings will go away in
just a few minutes. Once you get beyond the first week
the cravings get weaker and more time passes between
them.

Psych yourself up that you are a quitter then quit.
We’re here to help you get past your cravings. I’m
glad you’re here!

My New Game Plan

Here is another letter from my subscriber.
Ok, I’m driving my system nuts with this on again off again thing. So As I walked the kids to school this morning (in -11 degrees Fahrenheit at that) and I came up with a game plan. I have about half a pack here now, I haven’t smoked a whole one, just alot of light up, puff a few times and put out. I’m going to finish them, when they are gone, I am going to restart my quit meter, and try again. I’m then going to start a new project on my website, and work on creating some things for it. That’s my plan anyhow. It helps that I know what to expect now. I was foolishly thinking that since the wellbutrin makes the cigs taste so bad, that it would be easy to quit. I was wrong. I now know that day 3 will be my worst day, and I can prepare for that. And I still have 2 weeks til hubby comes home, so I still have a chance to be done by then. So that’s it, that’s my big plan.
