<p>My first clue ought to have been when the Marlboro Man<br />
died of lung cancer.</p>
<p>Good thing it&#8217;s never too late to quit!</p>

<p>RE:<br />
I found an interesting way of looking at cravings from<br />
the New York state health website, the 5 Ds:</p>
<p>1. DELAY a minute or two and the urge will pass.</p>
<p>2. DRINK WATER to fight off cravings.</p>
<p>3. DO SOMETHING ELSE to fight off cravings.</p>
<p>4. DEEP BREATHE It will relax you. Close your eyes and<br />
take 10 slow deep breaths.</p>
<p>5. DISCUSS your thoughts and feelings with someone<br />
close to you.</p>
<p>Just remember that the cravings will pass and that you<br />
are bigger than nicotine. You&#8217;re in charge, not a<br />
chemical cocktail we know as a cigarette!</p>

<p>My worst cravings are in the morning, so I eat my oatmeal, drink my<br />

<p>Just a wee minute to thank those that have been there when I need them and<br />
been able to back off when i ask them too.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m going through stages now where I like tiem to myself to do what I want<br />
when I want.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m starting the Atkins diet tomorrow as well!</p>
<p>I cant&#8217; wait to be honest.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been on my Gazelle each morning for 30mins and then shower or bath!</p>
<p>And the dog shall be receiving a 45 to 60 minute walk each and everyday too.<br />
Plus I&#8217;m going to make more of an effort to play with her outside now that<br />

I work at home also, I&#8217;m an Avon lady and I know what<br />
you mean about being bored, taking a break, or in between tasks or<br />
whatever. However when I worked in an office, I couldn&#8217;t wait to go<br />
outside and &#8220;escape&#8221; my desk and take a break. Even during my first<br />
quit, I&#8217;d still go outside to get away from that chained at the desk<br />
feeling.<br />
&gt; When I fidgit I press my cuticles, LOL.<br />
&gt; One thing that I&#8217;ve heard of that might help is take a plastic<br />
straw and cut it into the size of a cig, puff on that, deep puffs or<br />
like that of a cigarette. You get oxygen and you get kind of a buzz<br />
from puffing oxygen straws, plus you have that hand to mouth thing.</p>

The reason i&#8217;m here is that i have 24 days until my QUIT day and i<br />
feel i will need that extra support when the time comes.<br />

I have smoked for 11 years (19-30) I&#8217;ve never attempted to quit because<br />
I don&#8217;t like to set myself up for failure. However i&#8217;m ready now, or<br />
more accurately, this is the timetable I&#8217;ve set up for myself. I&#8217;ve<br />
never wanted to be a smoker in my 30&#8242;s. When you&#8217;re in your twenties<br />
you&#8217;re dumb and think you&#8217;re invincible, as you get older, you know<br />
better. even though my grandfather died from lung cancer. (I justified<br />
it by saying, &#8216;Well he was my grandmother&#8217;s third husband, no blood<br />
relative has died-yet&#8217;)</p>
<p>Before I throw down the gauntlet (cancer stick) I&#8217;d appreciate the heads<br />
up on withrawal symptoms so I know what I can expect and prepare myself.<br />
I can&#8217;t bear the thought of doing the same things I&#8217;ve done without<br />
cigarettes. Somehow it became a reward system for me. I can&#8217;t sit at<br />
the computer without them. I can&#8217;t spell check without them (what will<br />
i do with my hands while i&#8217;m waiting?) Waiting for the bus, i time how<br />
long i&#8217;ve been standing there by the length of my cig. And forget about<br />
talking on the phone or a lively conversation. How will i argue without<br />
waving a cig in my opponents face?</p>
<p>I hope to join you soon, tallying up cigs not smoked, money saved, but<br />
i&#8217;m a scaredy-cat.</p>

<p>The first thing you&#8217;ll have to do is think up<br />
replacements for all your paired behaviors.<br />
cigarette/computer; cigarette/argue; cigarette/phone;<br />
etc. etc.</p>
<p>One behavior does not equal the need for a cigarette.</p>
<p>As long as you think in terms of &#8220;I can&#8217;t bear the<br />
thought of &#8230; &#8221; quitting will be a lot harder than it<br />
has to be.</p>
<p>The single best piece of advice I got from a<br />
psychologist is to think in terms of what you are<br />
STARTING rather than what you are leaving behind.<br />
Think in terms of &#8220;I&#8217;m starting a healthier lifestyle<br />
and leaving behind a nasty habit.&#8221;</p>
<p>The better you are at changing that voice inside you<br />
to self-talk that you don&#8217;t need a cigarette and that<br />
you are a nonsmoker the easier it will be to get past<br />
the first week.</p>
<p>Before you take the plunge, figure out something you<br />
can do to keep your hands busy. Oftentimes, it&#8217;s<br />
harder to break the hand-to-mouth habit than it is to<br />
get past the need to induce more nicotine into your<br />
body.</p>
<p>Understand that the first week is the hardest and<br />
you&#8217;ll have cravings. The cravings will go away in<br />
just a few minutes. Once you get beyond the first week<br />
the cravings get weaker and more time passes between<br />
them.</p>
<p>Psych yourself up that you are a quitter then quit.<br />
We&#8217;re here to help you get past your cravings. I&#8217;m<br />

Ok, I&#8217;m driving my system nuts with this on again off again thing. So As I walked the kids to school this morning (in -11 degrees Fahrenheit at that) and I came up with a game plan. I have about half a pack here now, I haven&#8217;t smoked a whole one, just alot of light up, puff a few times and put out. I&#8217;m going to finish them, when they are gone, I am going to restart my quit meter, and try again. I&#8217;m then going to start a new project on my website, and work on creating some things for it. That&#8217;s my plan anyhow. It helps that I know what to expect now. I was foolishly thinking that since the wellbutrin makes the cigs taste so bad, that it would be easy to quit. I was wrong. I now know that day 3 will be my worst day, and I can prepare for that. And I still have 2 weeks til hubby comes home, so I still have a chance to be done by then. So that&#8217;s it, that&#8217;s my big plan. </p>
